A new article published in Child Neurology Open aimed to describe the role of microbiome in Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Here, several evolving areas of research were discussed to support the hypothesis that gut microbiota could be implicated in the pathogenesis of ADHD. The authors identified a unique composition of gut bacteria which could be linked to behaviors in ADHD. An increased incidence of gastrointestinal symptoms – constipation and flatulence, in children with ADHD relative to controls was also noted. It was stated that emerging data suggests that immune dysregulation in ADHD may be associated with an altered microbiome, low-grade inflammation, and gastrointestinal dysfunction. Yet, more studies are required to elucidate exact mechanisms and causality of this implication. In inference, altered microbiome, gastrointestinal symptoms, and immune dysregulation were speculated to be associated with the ADHD phenotypes.
